Our volunteers are awesome and amazing, and we can’t thank them enough! Our nonprofit exists and continues to grow because of the kindness and generosity of the people in Champaign-Urbana!

All activities are at the Champaign Church of Christ; 1509 W. John St; Champaign, IL 61821 (Map)

For information regarding child volunteers, group volunteering, and image/media policy, please see the bottom of this page.

Food sorting (Biweekly, normally Wednesday between 3-4:30 pm): Volunteers repackage food into individual bags and prepare bins full of bags for each school. Our nonprofit is unique because kids are welcome to help sort food! It is important for kids to gain an awareness of community issues and learn that they have the power to help and create change! Many teens from middle school and high schools assist us to help fulfill their honor society service hours because our sorts are a fun and easy way to serve.

Delivery Truck Unloading (10-12 people; on 2nd Monday of each month during the day): Once a month, we need help unloading the food we order from the store and Eastern Illinois Foodbank and storing it in the church.  The foodbank delivery is always at 12:30 PM.  The store delivery can either be in the morning or the afternoon, and is usually finalized 2-3 weeks prior to the delivery.

School Delivery Volunteers: We have volunteers who deliver the bags of food to the social workers at each school. Even if your school already has a delivery person, having a back up person is helpful. If you are interested in this opportunity, please fill out this interest form.

Volunteer Leaders: In addition to our usual volunteer events, we are seeking passionate and talented individuals to take on leadership roles.  These roles would be great for people that would like to take a more active role in Feeding Our Kids, as well as people that would like to volunteer more, but have trouble coming to our volunteer events that often occur during the work day.  The leadership roles include Volunteer Coordinators (assisting with volunteer outreach and management), Sort Captains (running the individual sort rooms as well as the overall food sorts), and serving on various committees.

If you are interested in becoming a Volunteer Leader, please fill out this application form.

Community Partners: We are also looking for businesses, clubs, and churches that would like to partner with us for food drive, fundraising, or awareness events.  If you have an idea of how your group and Feeding Our Kids could partner, please fill out our contact form.

Child Volunteer Policy

Children are always welcome to volunteer.  However, we would appreciate keeping numbers manageable, therefore please try to keep these guidelines in mind: <7 years old, 2 children per adult; 8-10 years old, 3 children per adult; 11-13 years old, 4 children per adult.

Older teens can come unsupervised, but need to bring a completed permission slip and medical-authorization form in case of emergency.  This can be downloaded here.

Volunteering as a Group

We would love to host your business, community, or youth group as volunteers!  Please fill out our contact form first so we can better coordinate with you and plan accordingly.  Please do this BEFORE signing up online.

Images & Media Policy

Often, we will be taking pictures and video during volunteer events for future use on social media and fundraising campaigns, possibly including release to media outlets.  We will always give notice at the events when we are doing so.  If you do not want us to take pictures or video of you or your children, please let the photographer know right away.  Otherwise, all volunteers are considered to consent to picture and video recording.
